Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Am I eligible for BEQVEZ?
As with any new treatment, it’s normal to have questions. The first step is to talk to your doctor to see if BEQVEZ is right for you. BEQVEZ is a one-time gene therapy for certain adults with moderate to severe hemophilia B. Your doctor will perform certain tests and review your medical information to determine if BEQVEZ is right for you.
BEQVEZ may be an option if you:
- Are male and 18 years of age or older
- Have moderate to severe hemophilia B
Your doctor will tell you about potential lifestyle changes you may need to make before getting BEQVEZ, like:
- Limiting alcohol during the first year after the BEQVEZ infusion
- Not donating sperm and being abstinent or using a male condom for the first 6 months after your infusion
- These are not all of the eligibility requirements for BEQVEZ. Talk to your doctor to learn more.
How is BEQVEZ different from my current treatment for hemophilia B?
Gene therapy may help remove the need for routine factor IX prophylaxis (FIX prophy). It does this by helping your body make its own clotting factor. That means instead of infusing routinely, you may have bleed protection after just one infusion of BEQVEZ.†
†Individual results and duration of effect may vary. The main BEQVEZ study is ongoing to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of BEQVEZ. On-demand FIX may still be required.
How is BEQVEZ given? How long does it take?
BEQVEZ is given as a one-time infusion at a gene therapy treatment center. The infusion takes about 1 hour, but you will need to be at the center before and for at least 3 hours after the infusion.
The process before, during, and after your infusion may vary across centers. The infusion center you use will provide you with information to guide you through each part of the infusion process.
What are the most common side effects with BEQVEZ?
The most common side effect seen in ≥5% of people following treatment with BEQVEZ was raised liver enzymes. In the main BEQVEZ study, 62% (28 out of 45) of participants received corticosteroids for raised liver enzymes and/or a decrease in FIX activity. In the initial BEQVEZ studies, 20% (3 out of 15) did.‡
Zero participants in the BEQVEZ studies experienced serious side effects.
‡The average time people received corticosteroids was 113 days (about 4 months).
How does gene therapy with BEQVEZ work?
BEQVEZ aims to deliver a working gene to help your body make its own FIX. In hemophilia B, your FIX gene is changed or mutated. As a result, your body doesn’t make enough clotting FIX protein. BEQVEZ is designed to give your body the healthy (working or functioning) FIX gene it lacks. BEQVEZ uses a vector to carry the working gene to the liver. After the one-time BEQVEZ infusion gets to the liver, it helps your body make more clotting FIX proteins.
What happens in the first year after my treatment? How often will I need to see my doctor? What will my doctor check?
It will be important to see your care team for post-infusion monitoring routinely after the infusion. Post-infusion follow-ups, which include blood draws, are done 1 or 2 times a week in the first 4 months after receiving BEQVEZ and lessen over time.
You will have blood tests to assess your liver health and FIX activity levels.
Your care team will also remind you about:
- Limiting alcohol during the first year after the BEQVEZ infusion
- Not donating sperm and being abstinent or using a male condom for the first 6 months after your infusion
How long will the treatment last?
Gene therapy may help remove the need for routine FIX prophy. It does this by helping your body make its own clotting factor. That means instead of infusing routinely, you may have bleed protection after just one infusion of BEQVEZ.
Individual results and duration of effect may vary. The main BEQVEZ study is ongoing to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of BEQVEZ. On-demand FIX may still be required.
Where should I go for my BEQVEZ treatment?
BEQVEZ is given as a one-time infusion at a gene therapy treatment center. Once deemed eligible for and prescribed BEQVEZ, your care team can direct you to the right infusion center.
How much will I owe for my gene therapy treatment? Is BEQVEZ covered by my insurance?
